The site of the first charter of Toruń (Thorn) was always a great unknown. Together with the Regional Muzeum in Toruń we created a research project based on our experiences on the study of the abandoned medieval towns of Nieszawa and Dzwonowo. The project received a grant from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and the applied methodology led to the discovery and documentation of the first Teutonic Order charter town in history. This was accomplished by GIS analyses, archival cartography, remote sensing and geophysical prospection. Over 10ha of magnetic gradiometry measurements were conducted and they revealed the double moat system of the quadrilateral town plan as well as sunken cellars of houses and later stone/brick architecture of a grange.
