From The Archives: Abandoned Medieval Town of Barczewko/Alt-Wartenburg, PL

In 2013 and 2014 we conducted a earth resistance and magnetic gradiometry survey on the archaeological site in Barczewko. The aim of the research was to gather data about the possibility that the earthwork site in Barczewko was rather the location of the Medieval town of Alt-Wartenburg instead of a Early Medieval stronghold. The gathered data allowed the recognition of a typical town grid, with a visible central building (“mercatorium”) and market square. The research was commisioned by a joint University of Gdańsk and University of Griefswald project.
