Integration of Geophysics & Aerial Data in Rzemienowice, PL

Archaeologically, the prevailing representation of Przeworsk Culture finds, both in quantity and weight, constitute an important dataset which supplements and confirms both aerial and geophysical interpretations of the Rzemienowice landscape. This is a practical example of how integration allows recognition of chronological and taxonomical contexts. In such cases spatial patterns, individual feature shapes and their location within the landscape can, without excavation, be linked to specific periods and cultures. Iron Age finds in the study area are key indicators to the presence of a former, largely Iron Age settlement complex.

In recent years non-invasive methods have made a large impact in Polish scientific projects and through practical applications have been slowly infiltrating the archaeological establishment. Despite this progress, deeper methodological reflections and interdisciplinary research focused on non-invasive technique evaluation is rare. Currently we know that non-invasive techniques have great, although not limitation free, potential for the discovery of archaeological features. Whilst we understand most of the basic processes and factors influencing how and why certain features manifest themselves, we do not understand the regional and local (“site” specific) conditions that may prevent or obscure a remote sensing response.

Our research is a necessary stage that will help us quantitatively assess remote sensing approaches by studying the (physical, chemical and soil) contrasts between feature fills and natural sediments. The landscape of Rzemienowice was selected for our case study due to available multi-method surveys all of which could serve as baseline comparative data for work in this region. The furthering of understanding of non-invasive data with proper interpretation is based on almost a decade of systematic researchwork in the area. Given the scope of this interdisciplinary topic it should be regarded as a continuous process with regular reassessment. We suggest long-term, consistent research based on similar methodologies, which will explain the local processes that must supersede the current qualitative, anecdotal and intuitional practices.
