The hillfort in Grąbczyn (is located in the central part of the Polish Pomerania on the northern shore of the Wierzchowo Lake . This site is quite has been known to archaeologists for a long time but until now has not been the subject of any systematic research. The earliest mentions date back to the 19th century, then during the 20th century there were several surface surveys and small excavations conducted. According to current knowledge, based on pottery sherds that were collected until now, this site is dated to the Bronze Age (more precise chronology unknown) and Early Middle Ages (IX–X/XI century AD). However, no further details connected wits its character and function within local settlement network during both mentioned periods are known.
In 2017 a new research project was launched at the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology of the University of Gdańsk and in 2021 we were commissioned to conduct a non-invasive survey in the area which despite difficult atmospheric and field conditions and also a lack of electricity for two days at our accommodation turned out some impressive results. Researchers from UG plan to conduct further excavations based on our data in 2022.
